About Renee Zellweger

Renee Kathleen Zellweger was born April 25, 1969 in Katy, Texas to Emil Zellweiger, a Swiss-born engineer and Kjellfrid Zellweiger, a Norwegian-born nurse and midwife. Renee's older brother, Drew, was born in 1967. Renee became interested in acting during high school where she was a member of the drama club. She continued to study acting at the University of Texas, and began to think of it as a career possibility. Not feeling ready to try Hollywood, Renee auditioned around Texas, landing roles in films including 'Reality Bites' and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." The critical praise Renee earned for her role in "Love and a .45" fortified her for a move to LA. Renee received her "big break" when Cameron Crowe caught her performance in "Whole Wide World." He was casting Jerry McGuire at the time - he found his Dorothy Boyd in Renee and cast her opposite Tom Cruise. Renee has won Golden Globe awards for her performances in "Nurse Betty" and "Chicago." She was nominated for an Academy award for Bridget Jones' Diary, and won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2004's "Cold Mountain." She was once engaged to Jim Carrey, whom she began dating after filming "Me, Myself and Irene," but the couple called off their plans shortly before the wedding.
